New to TMS?

What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for regulating stress, mood and sleep. It has been studied for over 40 years and is used in clinics worldwide.

What we help with

Which of these sounds like you?

EXOMIND TMS gently stimulates the brain networks behind sleep, mood, cravings and self-control. Choose what matters most to you and see what the research found.

Figures from BTL's EXOMIND clinical studies: a 33-person mental wellbeing study (3-month follow-up) and a 51-person, placebo-controlled willpower and food-craving study (1-month follow-up). Individual results vary, and our doctor will talk you through what to expect.

Lying awake again? You're far from alone.

Poor sleep doesn't stay in the bedroom. It follows you into work, your mood and your relationships. If the apps, teas and sleep hygiene lists haven't touched it, the cause often sits in how your brain handles stress. That's exactly where TMS works.

  • Lying awake for hoursYour body is exhausted but your mind won't switch off.
  • The 3am wake-upYou drop off fine, then wake in the small hours and stay awake.
  • Tired but wiredStress keeps you running on adrenaline long after the day is done.
  • A different approachTMS gently targets the brain area behind stress and mood. No tablets, no downtime.

The technology

How TMS therapy works

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the part of the brain linked to sleep, stress and mood. We use EXOMIND by BTL, a non-invasive device designed to support mental wellbeing.

  1. 1

    The coil

A light applicator rests against your forehead while you sit back in a reclined chair, fully awake.

  2. 2

    Gentle magnetic pulses

Pulses pass painlessly through the skin and skull. Most people feel a light tapping or tingling.

  3. 3

    The prefrontal cortex

The pulses stimulate the region of the brain involved in regulating mood and stress.

Non-invasive

No needles, no medication and no anaesthetic.

The research

Built on 40 years of TMS research

TMS is one of the most studied brain stimulation technologies in medicine. Using it to support everyday wellbeing is newer, and we'll always be honest about where that research stands.

  1. 1985

    TMS is born

The first TMS device is demonstrated in Sheffield, UK.

  2. 2008

    Cleared for depression

After years of clinical trials, TMS is cleared by the US FDA to treat depression.

  3. Today

    EXOMIND by BTL

The ExoTMS protocol is being studied for sleep, mood, stress response and self-control.

Sleep & stress study

A clinical study focused on sleep

BTL has completed a sham-controlled clinical study looking at EXOMIND for sleep quality and stress.

  • 6treatment sessions
  • PSQIa standard sleep quality questionnaire
  • 1 & 3month follow-ups

What does sham-controlled mean? Some participants received a placebo version of the treatment, so real effects can be told apart from expectation.

Our honest take: the evidence for TMS as a technology is extensive. Research on EXOMIND specifically for wellbeing is newer and still growing, and our doctor will talk you through what to realistically expect.

Is it right for me?

Safety comes first

TMS uses a magnetic field, so the same safety rules apply as for an MRI scan. If you can't have an MRI, you can't have TMS.

Often a good fit

  • Adults whose sleep is wearing them down
  • People who feel stressed, low or wired
  • Anyone wanting a medication-free option

Not suitable if you

  • Have metal or an implanted device in or near your head
  • Have epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Not sure? Fillings, braces and dental implants are fine. Our doctor confirms you're suitable before any treatment begins.

Answer each question to see if anything rules you out.

  1. Do you have metal implants, clips or fragments in or near your head?Fillings, braces, bridges and single dental implants are fine.

  3. Have you ever had epilepsy or a seizure?

Get in touch
How do I get started?

Fill in our short enquiry form, which includes a few quick safety questions. Our team will call you within 2 working days to talk things through and book your doctor consultation.

Who decides if I can have treatment?

Our in-house, IMC-registered doctor. They review your screening answers and health history, then prescribe your treatment if it's right for you.

Who can't have TMS?

Anyone who can't have an MRI scan, including people with metal implants in or near the head, pacemakers or implanted stimulators. It's also not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with epilepsy or a history of seizures. Dental fillings, braces and bridges are fine.

How long is a session, and how many will I need?

Each session takes around 25 minutes, and a full course runs over 6 weeks. Your exact course is prescribed by our doctor.

Does the effect last?

Neuroplastic changes build for up to six months after treatment. Many people choose to schedule booster sessions twice a year, much like a dental clean or a skin peel.

Does it hurt?

It shouldn't. Most people feel a light tapping or tingling on the scalp. Some notice a mild headache or scalp discomfort in early sessions, which usually eases. The settings can be adjusted at any time.

Is there any downtime?

None. You can drive, work and carry on with your day straight after a session.

Is it noisy?

The device makes a clicking sound, so we'll give you earplugs to wear during your session.

Can I keep taking my medication?

Usually, yes. Tell our doctor about everything you take, including any changes in the last month, and they'll advise you.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can enquire directly.
